At the start of 2017, I made a goal of developing a morning ritual focused on mindfulness and meditation. In addition to meditating each morning, I also began drinking what I call a "wellness tonic". It is a mixture of turmeric, ginger, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, red cayenne pepper, and honey. These ingredients are soothing, and also have been linked to many health benefits:
- improved digestion
- improved mood
- increased energy
- anti-inflammatory
- pain relief
- antioxidants
- increased metabolism
- anti-bacterial/anti-viral properties
- alkalizes system
- detoxification
- probiotics
- improves skin health
- helps with allergies
I have found that having these elements as some of the first things I put in my system sets my body and mind up for a good day. I have noticed improved digestion and energy since incorporating this, and I personally like the taste too! It is a warming mix of spicy, sweet, and tart.
Here's How to Make it:
Ingredients:
- Juice of 3 lemons
- 1 Cup chopped and peeled fresh ginger
- 1 Cup chopped and peeled fresh turmeric
- 1/4 cup Water
- 1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/2 TSP Ground Cinnamon
- 1/8 TSP Red Cayenne Pepper Powder
- 1/2 TSP Raw Honey
A blender, ice cube tray
After juicing the lemons, chopping and peeling the ginger and turmeric, place these ingredients into a blender cup with 1/4 cup of water. Blend until smooth/pureed.
The mixture can then be added to water as is (about 1/2 TBSP) with the cinnamon, red cayenne pepper, honey and Apple Cider Vinegar.
Or to preserve for longer, I like to freeze the mixture in an ice cube tray! Add about 1/2 TBSP of the mixture to the sections of an empty ice cube tray and freeze overnight. Once frozen, remove cube and place in a mug with hot water, the cinnamon, red cayenne pepper, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Stir and enjoy!
The whole process takes about an hour to cut, peel, chop, blend etc. Although it is a little bit of a time investment, it lasts a long while. And, the colors and scents of the ingredients are really lovely and can contribute to an engaging and mindful preparation processes. Let it be a meditation in itself.
Side note, the turmeric is an amazing bright yellow color, but can stain surfaces (and finger nails too). So just be mindful of that before proceeding. I like to think my whole inner system is neon yellow from all the turmeric i consume... inner sunshine :)
Wishing you happy mornings! <3 Taylor
